On Monday Eskom announced that it had filed papers at the High Court in Pretoria in a bid to recover at least R3.8 billion from former Eskom executives and board members, as well as members of the Gupta family.

"For too long a blind eye has been turned to the corrupt dealings at Eskom with its resources being treated as a personal piggy bank by those seeking to capture the SOE for nefarious purposes," says DA chief whip Natasha Mazzone.

The implicated include former Eskom CEO Brian Molefe, former CFO Anoj Singh and Matshela Koko, who served as acting chief executive.

Mazzone believes the case is a test for the SIU to see if the unit is able to investigate a case of this magnitude.

"It has been a long time coming, but I do know extensive investigations have been done on cases brought by the DA.

"We certainly know that there is overwhelming evidence that has mounted in this particular case and our hope is that the wait has been so long so that they can ensure they have a watertight case.”
