ANC land statements worry agri. union

KZN Agricultural Union, KwaNalu, says it's concerned over recent comments made by senior ANC members in the province - in relation to land expropriation.

KwaNalu's Sandy le Marc says the comments made by party officials during their January 8 rally in KwaDukuza on the north coast - were not made within the context of the Property Evaluations Bill, the Land Expropriation Bill, and the function of the Valuer-General.

ANC provincial chairperson and acting Premier, Sihle Zikalala called on government to speed up land expropriation - with 70-percent of the land going to government and then leased out.

Le Marc says KwaNalu understands the need to speed up expropriation - but that it must be done in the correct way:

"Our Constitution doesn't allow for land to be taken just as an equitable compensation. So it's important to follow the procedure, so that it's stipulated in the Constitution, and various pieces of legislation and government," she said.

Le Marc says it's important that the land issue is addressed in a way that benefits the country:

"As an organisation, we have committed to the economic transformation of both farmers and farmworkers and others involved in those rural areas. So we are very involved in that and will continue to be proactive in terms of the processes we take in allowing SA to benefit at the end of the day," she said.

President Jacob Zuma - who made a surprise appearance at the rally - said exportation must be done in line with the law.
