More focus needed on rural development in KZN: MEC for Agriculture
Updated | By Lucky Khanyile
The MEC for Agriculture says the lack of interest in farming from people in rural areas is concerning.
In a statement, Themba Mthembu says it's time more people partake into various forms of agriculture as it helps provide for families and is a key contributing factor to the country's economy.
The ongoing drought in the province is said to be the cause for discouraging farming with established commercial farmers selling their land.
The department's Khaye Nkwanyana says with Friday being World Food Day, officials will be highlighting the importance with traditional leaders and communities.

With a particular focus on youth and women, the department plans to develop a programme to support a new generation of farmers.
"It has to be a culture that everybody must engage in - any form of agricultural activity towards the vicissitude of poverty and the sky-rocketing food prices in our retail our stores," he said
