ANC in KZN ‘waiting for guidance’ from NEC on Phala Phala report

The ANC in KZN says it will wait for guidance from the party’s national executive committee on the findings of the independent panel on Phala Phala.

Provincial spokesperson Mafika Mndebele says the ANC in KZN has studied the report and its findings on the conduct of President Cyril Ramaphosa.

“The ANC in KZN is aware that the national executive committee is seized with that particular work and people await the cue from the ANC."

The Section 89 Independent panel found preliminary evidence that Ramaphosa’s handling of the burglary at his Limpopo farm may have violated the Constitution

Former National Commissioner of Correctional Services Arthur Fraser first laid a criminal charge against the president, accusing him of covering up the burglary.

Ramaphosa has denied any wrongdoing and asked the panel not to take the matter any further.

But the findings now leave Ramaphosa vulnerable to impeachment proceedings in Parliament if he chooses to stay on and fight for his political life.

Mndebele says they will look to the party's NEC to decide on the way forward.

"We hope the NEC will be in the position to give us a way forward as it relates to this particular matter."

ANC NEC members met at the Nasrec Expo Centre in Johannesburg on Friday to discuss the report’s findings amid mounting pressure on Ramaphosa to resign.

The meeting was adjourned shortly after it began to allow the party’s top four leaders and a national working committee to process the report.

The NEC is set to reconvene on Sunday.
