Secretary general Blade Nzimande says they've noted the call from the ANC Youth league for an early elective conference but told reporters in Kempton Park he feels the league is being used by others to test the waters.

"The motivation for this call is entirely factional. If followed through it would result in deepening disunity within the ANC and across its alliance. The winners will inherit a shell organisation. Those making this call are not even bothered to disguise their factional intentions. They have learnt nothing from the local government elections," he said.

Meanwhile, the party came out in support of Finance Minister, Pravin Gordhan who has been under the spotlight since being implicated in an investigation by the Hawks.

Nzimande says they have a view that there is an attempt to capture the treasure for selfish narrow-minded interests.

He added that it feels like ten years ago when state institutions were used to fight petty factional battles.

He said that the "harassment" of the Minister of Finance is politically motivated.

Nzimande also said that the charges are designed as a pre-text to remove Gordhan from office and weaken the struggle against corruption.
