Last week Gordhan refused to report to the Hawks after being summoned for a pre-arrest warning statement by the elite crime fighting unit.

The SACP's Blade Nzimande told journalists at a press briefing that they stand firmly behind Gordhan amid reports that he and two other former SARS officials could face arrest this week.

The National Prosecuting Authority yesterday confirmed it received a docket from the Hawks into the so-called rogue unit at SARS.

However, it dismissed a report stating that arrests were imminent.

Nzimande says they have a view that there is an attempt to capture the treasure for selfish narrow-minded interests.

He added that it feels like ten years ago when state institutions were used to fight petty factional battles.

"But as numerous commentators have observed, the putative charges against Gordhan are a flimsy concoction without the slightest basis of law.

He said that the "harassment" of the Minister of Finance is politically motivated.

Nzimande also said that the charges are designed as a pre-text to remove Gordhan from office and weaken the struggle against corruption.
