ANC 'committed' to paying staff - Duarte

The African National Congress (ANC) has described as valid, concerns raised by its staff members.

Workers at the governing party held a lunchtime picket over unpaid salaries at its Luthuli House headquarters in Johannesburg.

 

The ANC’s deputy secretary-general Jessie Duarte accepted the memorandum of demands from the workers on behalf of the organisation. 

 

Duarte moved to assure staff that the organisation is committed to paying the salaries in spite of its cash-flow concerns.

 

She said there are no plans to reduce any salaries.

 

"The current cash-flow challenges faced by the organisation is of a result of numerous factors... includes the general economic situation, the implementation of the Political Party Funding Act since April this year and including the urgent need to upgrade the ANC funding model.”

Duarte also vowed to speedily resolve the financial issues bedevilling the party.  

 

The party had to make an urgent salary payments on Tuesday morning as staffers at the organisation embarked on a lunchtime picket. 

 

The staffers at the oldest liberation movement in the world are demanding their salaries be paid on time, including their medical aid schemes and contributions to the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF). 

 

The staffers have given the ANC seven days to respond to their demands or they would intensify their campaign.
