Analyst believes FW de Klerk should focus on nation building

A political analyst says it appears the controversial apartheid statement by FW de Klerk was aimed at sowing anger and division in the country.

Analyst, Imraan Buccus has weighed in on the national discussion around the remarks by the former statesman and his foundation - amid calls for him to be stripped of his presidential privileges and Nobel Peace Prize Award.

"People like De Klerk who should be swept into the dustbin of history shouldn't always be allowed to re-emerge like this and to further divide the country," he says.

The EFF has rejected an apology by De Klerk and his foundation for saying that apartheid was not a crime against humanity. The party feels they weren't sincere.

Buccus has questioned De Klerk's thinking in the first place - saying what he should be focusing on is building the country.

"I think if anything, if people like him are to emerge, they should be doing what they can to promote cohesion at a time when we really need it."

"De Klerk has been basking in the glory of the decision he had taken and has been doing so far more than he deserves to," he says.

The De Klerk Foundation said yesterday that it's withdrawing the statement and unconditionally apologises for the confusion, anger and hurt that it's caused.
