Alleged smuggler nabbed with gold worth R11m

The Hawks have arrested an alleged gold smuggler at OR Tambo International Airport after he was found in possession of 23 pieces of gold worth an estimated R11 million.
The 33-year was arrested on Saturday after he travelled from Zimbabwe to South Africa.
Hawks spokesperson Philani Nkwalase says the suspect was arrested by the Hawks’ serious organised crime unit.
"The traveller was requested to scan his luggage at the international arrivals Customs section of the South African Revenue Service. Twenty-three pieces of gold were allegedly found on his luggage.

"He allegedly failed to declare any items and did not have any permits or licences to be in possession or transport gold and the Hawks were called to effect the arrest and further investigation."
The suspect is expected to appear in the Kempton Park Regional Court on Monday.
