Alleged drug smuggler 'not a local celeb'

A woman who allegedly tried to smuggle drugs worth R4.6m into the country is not a celebrity, police said.

"Contrary to public belief, the arrested woman is not a South African celebrity," Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo said.

The SA Revenue Service said earlier that the woman is a South African actress.

Spokesperson Luther Lebelo said the woman, after arriving from Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, went through the "nothing to declare" channel at the OR Tambo International Airport on Sunday, when she was stopped by customs officials.

Fifteen parcels weighing a total of 15.4kg and containing ephedrine were found in one of her bags.

"The narcotics and passenger, identified as a South African actress, were detained and subsequently handed over to South African Police Service organised crime for further investigation," Lebelo said.

"In line with South African law, the details of the passenger will only be released once she has appeared in court," Lebelo said.

News24 is aware of the woman's name, but she can't be identified until she has appeared in court.

However, a Twitter guessing game, under the #GuessTheActress, speculated over who she is and whether she appeared in local soapies.

Several prominent soapie actresses were also mentioned by Twitter users.

The twitter detectives narrowed in on Stevie French, who is in the UAE, but she proved not to be the drug mule.

She posted a selfie by a pool while on holiday.

The investigation continues regardless.
