Alert for KZN as fire season approaches
Updated | By Shaun Ryan
Wetter summer conditions in KZN in recent months could increase the fire risk for some areas across the province this year.
The KZN Fire Protection Association's Simon Thomas has been speaking ahead of what is commonly referred to as 'the fire season'.
Thomas says fire fuels - like grass and other vegetation - will begin drying out as we approach winter and the rain begins to subside.
Thomas says farmers and other landowners should have already been making the necessary arrangements to reduce the risk of runaway fires - including controlled burns.
"Land owners and farmers will be starting to do their annual fire break preparation. The public should be aware that we are moving into the fire season and to please report any unwanted and uncontrolled fires to local authorities as quickly as possible," Thomas said.

Thomas says people making braai fires must also ensure they are properly extinguished before leaving the area.
