Fire, safety guidelines to be assessed after Durban CBD fire
Updated | By Bernadette Wolhuter
A team from the Durban Fire Department will be investigating the cause of this morning's blaze at the old Lonsdale Hotel.
The building, in the city centre, was evacuated after the fire ripped through a shop on the ground level.
The property on the corner of Gillespie and Dr Pixley KaSeme streets is home to a number of shops and tertiary students.
Deputy Mayor, Fawzia Peer visited the site this morning.

She says if the owner is found to have contravened fire and safety regulations, they will be held accountable.
"I'm going to get my fire guys to do a complete assessment. This has to stop in Durban. There is going to be a fine if we find any transgression as far as human life is concerned," Peer said.
