Albert Falls Dam levels 'the lowest in years'
Updated | By Lethiwe Mdluli
Umgeni Water says it remains concerned over water levels at the Albert Falls dam - north of Pietermaritzburg.

The water utility's Shami Harichunder says the dam is only at about 20% capacity.
He says Albert Falls is one of the largest suppliers of water in the Umgeni system.
"It is the lowest it has been in almost 24 years. Albert Falls is a crucially important dam because it supplies water to Durban's treatment plant for treatment and then supply to greater parts of eThekwini," he says.

Harichunder says the water situation has improved slightly compared to this time last year - but says the dams in the Umgeni system are at around 50% collectively.
He says levels need to be at 70% for restrictions to be removed. eThekwini is urging communities to use water sparingly.
