"This now means 15% water restrictions will be mandatory. Umgeni Water will cut production of potable water by 15% and the three municipalities will also have to produce water savings of 15%," he said.

Harichunder says water shortage is still a major issue for the three affected municipalities.

"I think it is extremely important for all consumers in Durban, Pietermaritzburg and uMgungundlovu to realise that we are still facing water shortages because of poor rainfall and that the need to conserve water still remains. It actually is imperative that they play a role in conserving water."

KZN has been facing water supply problems due to the recent drought.
