AfriForum wants broader powers for farmers, neighbourhood watches to fight crime
Updated | By Sandile Bhengu
AfriForum says it could turn to the courts in an effort to broaden the scope of powers granted to farmers and neighbourhood watch groups to keep communities safe.

This decision follows the release of the lobby group's latest report on farm murders and attacks.
While the report showed a decline in both attacks and murders, AfriForum believes this could be down to under-reporting due to a lack of trust in the police.

The group's Jacques Broodryk says it's still too early in their investigation to say what the course of action would be.
"We haven't finalised that at this stage. We are still investigating what the force multipliers will be in terms of broadening the scope of the powers of patrollers.
"So once we have established that, then we will look at the most effective way to try to and increase those powers, which may include legal action.
"That is the first step we would look at, as how can we empower our patrollers legally to have more rights so that they can perform more effectively."
