"The road network is the backbone of our economy in South Africa. A road such as the N3 is an extremely important leisure corridor," the N3 Toll Concession's Con Roux said.

The N3 Toll Concession says it's very concerned about the recent attacks on truck drivers and disruptions by protesters on the national route.

The group's Con Roux says incidents like these threaten the local economy.

"We've noticed with growing concern - the number of incidents of arson, looting and torching of trucks and throwing of rocks from bridges. It's impacting on personal security when they are travelling," he said.

KZN's RTI says it's investigating after at least four heavy goods vehicles were torched in the vicinity of Mooi River, Frere and Pietermaritzburg on Saturday night.

Traffic has been flowing smoothly on the route between Cedara and Heidelberg.

Roux is advising motorists - making their way across the busy route - to be cautious.

"Try to ascertain the status of the road before setting out on a journey. If motorists come across any suspicious behaviour at all, that might be groups of people getting together next to the side of the road or vehicles stopping in suspicious circumstances - anything of that nature - please give us a call immediately," Roux said.
