LISTEN: Adv. Shamila Batohi appointed new NPA head
Updated | By Bernadette Wicks
Advocate Shamila Batohi has been appointed the new head of the National Prosecuting Authority.
President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the appointment few minutes ago.
Eleven candidates were interviewed by a panel led by Minister Jeff Radebe last month. The panel then recommended its top five candidates to the President.
Batohi takes over from Shaun Abrahams - whose appointment by former president Jacob Zuma was declared invalid and unconstitutional by Constitutional Court in August.
Batohi previously served at the Director of Public Prosecutions in KZN before heading to The Hague to serve at the International Criminal Court.

Ramaphosa says he has every faith in her.
"I'm confident that Advocate Batohi possesses all the attributes of a capable NDPP. Throughout her extensive and distinguished career and the selection process, she has shown herself as a fit and proper person,' he said.

Batohi's accepted her appointment, which is effective from February.
"Let us not forget that this is an historic moment for women. It is a recognition by our President that the role of women in the pursuit of equality, justice and a fair society is important," Batohi said.
