Activists call for removal of Orangutan from PMB zoo

An animal activist believes that an Orangutan being kept at the Natal Zoological Gardens outside Pietermaritzburg could be successfully integrated into a new sanctuary if removed from the facility.
There has been an international outcry for Opal to be removed from the Natal Zoological Gardens owned by controversial circus owner, Brian Boswell.
A petition is calling for the Orangutan to be sent to an animal sanctuary where she can be introduced to other orangutans.
Opal has been kept at the facility for more than 30 years.
A petitions website has already mustered 29 533 signatures.
Monkey Helpline’s Steve Smit says Opal will be able to adjust to new surroundings and climate.
"She will adapt to being back in a situation where she is not a prisoner in solitary confinement and where she will interact with other Orangutans and be able to live the life of a Orangutang in captivity but in a captivity that is designed to give her the best life possible," he said.
Meanwhile, Boswell told the Sunday Tribune newspaper that it would be in the animal's best interests to stay at his facility. He says moving her would be too traumatic.
