Activist shot in head outside Verulam court

A community activist is fighting for his life in hospital after being shot outside the Verulam Magistrate's Court.

Paramedics say Yousuf Ahmed Deedat, 65, was shot in the head while walking on George Sewpersadh Street with his wife a few metres from the court on Wednesday.
The gunman is on the run and police say an attempted murder case is being investigated.

Netcare 911 spokesperson, Shawn Herbst says the man had to be airlifted to hospital.
"Medics assessed the scene and found that the patient had sustained critical injuries and required Advanced Life Support intervention to stabilise him".

"Due to the nature of the patient's injuries, the Netcare 5 specialised helicopter ambulance was activated via Reaction Unit South Africa to airlift the patient to a specialist facility for the treatment he required".
"Circumstances leading up to the shooting will be investigated by the relevant authorities," he said.
