The party says it would be Durban's way of honouring the former IFP leader.

Buthelezi, who was the Traditional Prime Minister to the Zulu Monarch, died in September at the age of 95.

Action SA's provincial leader, Zwakele Mncwango, says Buthelezi's contribution to politics and education helped put KZN on the map.

He visited newly-elected Buthelezi clan leader Zuzifa at the KwaPhindangene Royal Palace on Monday.

"There is Mangosutho University because he realised challenges faced by Black people during difficult times of oppression, where Black people were not allowed to study certain courses at universities. Hence, he went out to look for funding to build this university.

"Moreover, he was able to protect this little land of KwaZulu-Natal. KZN is the only province where the land is still under the hands of Amakhosi."

Mncwango says other political parties will be consulted.

He says the Buthelezi family supports the proposal.

"The entire family is so excited by our proposal and gave the blessing and he really wished this proposal could go through and be passed by the council."
