Accused in Siam Lee case now faces 16 charges

The man accused of kidnapping and murdering Durban North woman, Siam Lee now faces 16 charges, including rape.

The 29-year-old appeared briefly in the Durban Magistrate's Court today.

Tears rolled down the faces of Lee's family when the accused stood in front of Magistrate Mohamed Motala in Court 10.

The man laughed occasionally during proceedings and shook his head often while in the dock.

He now faces 16 charges, including rape, murder, kidnapping and crimen injuria, among others.

The case is due back in court next week Tuesday.

The Assagay resident will return to the Durban North SAPS holding cells until then.

A formal bail hearing is expected to take place in early March.

The State says it will oppose bail.

Lee went missing from Durban North in early January.

She was last seen outside an alleged brothel in Margaret Maytom Avenue.

A massive city-wide search was launched, with many people turning to social media to call for her safe return.

The 20-year-old's badly burnt body was found on a New Hanover farm in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands two days after she disappeared.

An online petition has already been signed by more than 2,800 people calling for the accused not to be granted bail.
