There are about 2 500 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in KwaZulu-Natal schools, according to Education MEC Kwazi Mshengu.
Mshengu visited schools in the Amajuba District alongside the Deputy Minister of Basic Education, Reginah Mhaule on Tuesday.
Grade 7 learners returned to the classroom yesterday after a two-week break.

Mshengu explains how the department deals with new infections at schools.
"Our approach is that there are schools where they would report cases of COVID-19 infections ad we will not close the entire school because we are lead by experts from the Department of Health.
"They will identify the area that will be decontaminated based on information as provided by the school. We will decontaminate that area and open it within 48-hours.
"So the number of schools in the province is fluctuating, but we are trying our best to keep disruption at a minimum," says Mshengu.
