Abandoned Verulam baby safely at NGO

The Department of Social Development in KZN says a baby
found abandoned in Verulam is being cared for by a local NGO.
Emergency responders rescued the infant from bushes after a mango picker in the Dawncrest area found her.
"Currently the child is safe and we have been informed that the child is going to be placed in a place of safety, under the care of the mother who has gone through the process and check if she will be able to take care of the child," says department's Mhlabunzima Memela.
He has thanked the man who alerted rescuers on Monday.
Memela says they're investigating the allegations penned in a note that was left with the baby.
In the letter - believed to have been written by the three-month-old's mother - there are claims that pleas for help from social workers were ignored.

"We have tried to verify with our offices in Phoenix if there is any social worker that they know because the Verulam area is serviced by the Phoenix office.
"At the moment there is no information that seems to be coming forward about the mother approaching the social worker, or nothing recorded regarding the case that there was a lady who passed our offices and asked for any kind of help."
Meanwhile, Verulam police have opened a case of child abandonment.
