Abahlali rejects eThekwini's proposed rural household tax
Updated | By Nondumiso Dube
Shack dwellers movement Abahlali Basemjondolo has rejected the proposed tax by eThekwini on rural households.
Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda made the announcement during the State of the City Address last week.
He said the proposed tax would be a monthly flat rate of R100 for services.
There's a plan to present the proposal to the board of traditional land entity, the Ingonyama Trust.
Abahlali's Sbu Zikode believes the levy is unreasonable.

"Under the current economic situation, we do not think there's any reasonable government that will propose such a tax, especially expecting the rural communities who are already suffering, but also knowing very well that the government is unable to provide services.
"Trash is pilling up everywhere but people are paying rates and they do not get the return of tax that they pay."
He says they're willing to go to court to challenge the proposed tax.
"We would also be engaging with the Ingonyama Trust because we do not believe that his majesty would allow that his subjects are now forced to pay such an amount in the midst of such poverty."
