Shack dwellers' movement, Abahlali baseMjondolo says its members are fearing for their lives following the murder of the group's chairperson in eKukhayeni, Mariannhill.
S'fiso Ngcobo was gunned down on Tuesday night.
Police are yet to establish the motive for the shooting but Abahlali's S'bu Zikode believes it was a hit.

A number of the movement's members have been killed over the past year but Zikode says their murders can't be linked to politically-motivated murders in the province.
"Abahlali is not a political party. The killing of Abahlali cannot in any way be associated with the killings in KZN. We have lost a number of housing activist. Within a space of eight months last year - we had lost five lives," he said.
