AA welcomes reduction in road fatalities, warns 'not enough'

The Automobile Association says while the decrease in the
latest festive season road deaths is encouraging there is still a great need
for urgent intervention.

The AA reacted to the festive season statistics announced by Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula on Tuesday.
He revealed that 1 451 people had died on South Africa's roads between 1 December to 11 January - a 14% decrease compared to last year.
KZN fatalities dropped from 275 to 240, resulting in a 12.7% reduction.
"When we look at the minister saying that the number reduced by 14%, we compare that to the officially recorded figures of 2021/22 which were a lot higher," says the AA's Layton Beard.

"That does give us some cause of concern in terms of the accuracy of the numbers but having said that obviously a reduction is good but it's not enough
"We need more and we need more education and intensive traffic law enforcement, not only on the seasonal period but every day throughout the year."
