8-year-old dies in Cape Town paramedic attack

Cape Town police are investigating a paramedic attack that resulted in an 8-year-old patient dying in the back of an ambulance.

The ambulance had been transporting the boy to the Red Cross Children's Hospital when paramedics were robbed at gunpoint on the N2 in the early hours of this morning.

The young boy, who had sustained severe head injuries in a motorbike accident, passed away as a result of the delay.

This is the latest in a series of ambulance attacks in the Western Cape in recent months.

Police spokesperson, Noloyiso Rwexana says three suspects are on the run.

"Police are investigating cases of robbery and malicious damage to property. No one has been arrested," she said.

Meanwhile, the Western Cape Health Department's Zimkhitha Mqutheni is urging the public to report perpetrators to the police.

"One of our ambulances was attacked this morning, it was among other vehicles attacked. Valuables from inside the vehicle were taken. The boy was then taken to the Red Cross Children's Hospital where the medical team terminated treatment as a result of his severe head injuries," she said.
