70% of July unrest victims were shot, SAHRC hearing tells Ramaphosa

President Cyril Ramaphosa has responded to a preliminary report whose investigation found 70% of the more than 300 people who died during last year's unrest were shot.
The finding by the South African Human Rights Commission was put to Ramaphosa, who was testifying on Friday at its hearings into the riots in July.

Some of the violence took place in Phoenix, north of Durban, where 38 people were killed in incidents said to have been racially motivated.
"We now need to fathom and to find out exactly where these gunshots came from,” Ramaphosa told the commission.

"What I think I can allude to is that the police who were very restrained in the course of all this.
"I'd like to believe that the police were restrained even as they had to deal with a very testing and trying situation."
