He's going to testify on Friday about his response as head of state after parts of KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng were rocked by the week-long looting and deadly violence.

The unrest exposed a number of shortcomings from government and authorities, mainly around planning, intelligence, execution and manpower.

The president's testimony before the commission today follows that of other high profile officials such as Police Minister Bheki Cele, who, during the KZN round of public hearings, admitted to the commission that police were caught unaware and were immensely underprepared and outnumbered.

The series of finger-pointing between security clusters also came under the spotlight, along with tensions between the likes of Cele and former police commissioner Khehla Sithole, whose last day in office was on Thursday.

Sithole told the commission he did not see a need to descend onto KZN at any point during the unrest.

It's hoped Ramaphosa will shed more light on where he and his government may have dropped the ball during the unrest, which came at the cost of hundreds of lives and around R50 billion to the economy.
