7 Clicks stores damaged as protests over controversial ad continue

The Clicks Group says seven of its stores in the country have been damaged during protests by members of the EFF.

The company has confirmed there've been demonstrations at least 37 of its shops in provinces including KZN, Gauteng, Limpopo, Mpumalanga and the Western Cape. 


The EFF's leadership mobilised its members after a hair product advert on Clicks' website caused a public uproar.


In the ad's images - the hair of black African woman's was described as 'dry'' and 'damaged'. The words 'normal' and 'fine' appeared in another picture of a white hair model.


Many took to social media on Friday - accusing Clicks of unconscious bias - while others said it was pure racism.

In one video shared on social media today - protesters in EFF regalia are seen toppling shelves inside a Clicks store.


In Polokwane - party leader Julius Malema chained and padlocked the doors of a shop at a mall there.


A KZN EFF representative - Mlebuka Hlengwa - who protested outside a store on Durban's Pixley Kasame Street - says companies need to be more sensitive and unbiased in their campaigns.


"We want to tell them that they must make sure that when ever they do their ads they must try to something insensitive  towards a black person. We are going to protect black people in any way we can. We are prepared to die for black people."


The Clicks Group had its high court application to interdict the protests dismissed with costs on Monday. 


The hair care brand responsible for the advert has apologised. 


Tresemme and its owner Unilever - say the advert was meant to be a celebration of all hair types - but that it got it wrong.
