7 arrested for possession of abalone worth R1.4m

Seven people in the Western Cape are in police custody after they were found with abalone said to be worth R1.4 million.

Officers got word of a vehicle used to transport illegal abalone.
Members of various police units and officials from the Fisheries Department waited outside a property in Cape Town on Thursday, where they observed the vehicle being offloaded.

They arrested the suspects, aged between 27 and 43, and seized over 200kg of dried abalone.
"The seven suspects arrested are expected to appear in the Kuilsrivier Magistrate’s Court on 16 August 2021," Hawks spokesperson Zinzi Hani says.
