5G towers destroyed in KZN over 'unfounded' claims linked to COVID-19 pandemic
Updated | By Newswatch
KZN Premier, Sihle Zikalala says the culprits who torched and destroyed three cell phone network towers in Durban, this week, won't get away with it.
Zikalala has condemned the destruction of the recently-installed 5G masts in Umlazi, KwaMashu and Ntuzuma.
The damages have cost Vodacom and MTN millions of rands and caused huge disruptions to communication services.
The Premier's office says it's alleged that members of the community set fire to the telecommunications towers, in attacks, partly driven by conspiracy theories.

The unfounded claim is that there are dangers associated with 5G networks and that they are making people sick, by driving the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Zikalala says there are also allegations there wasn't enough public consultation before the towers were erected. He says arson and vandalism against infrastructure won't be tolerated.
