5 SASSA employees nabbed for allegedly committing fraud

Hawks officials in KwaZulu-Natal believe a social grant fraud syndicate is behind a number of incidents in Pietermaritzburg.

Five SASSA employees - who were nabbed in various offices in the city yesterday - are out on bail.

They allegedly processed old-age grants in the Mooi River office and opened bank accounts in the Western Cape.
Two staff members were arrested in that province last year.
Hawks spokesperson, Simphiwe Mhlongo says: "Their uniformity of doing this type of crime looks like a syndicate because they collude the money was transferred in these accounts, which were not existing in a form of being under the ownership of the real beneficiary."
