37% of KZN residents don't feel safe in their communities

A Stats SA research report states 37% of people who live in KwaZulu-Natal don't feel safe outside their homes.

The 'Victims of Crime Survey' sampled some 30 000 households who were asked to share their personal experiences with crime and whether they feel safe and secure.

The survey showed that in KZN more than a third of residents don't feel their communities are safe anymore compared to 57% of those who live in Gauteng and the Western Cape.

Statistician-general Pali Lehohla says they've found that crime is under-reported because people feel it's either not serious enough or that the police could or would not do anything about it.

"If one looks at how long it takes for a person to report a crime, the Western Cape has the lowest number of minutes taken to report whereas KwaZulu-Natal has about 63 minutes. This speaks of the response time so these are some of the problems," he said.

Lehohla says there's been a drop in the number of house break-ins in our province. For every 10 000 homes, around 4000 homes were broken into compared to 6000 and 7000 in the Free State and Western Cape respectively.
