26% of KZN residents pay bribes: survey

A newly released report, based on a survey, shows that most South Africans feel it is nearly impossible to go about their daily activities without bribery.

The survey was carried out across four provinces with just over 6 000 participants, across KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, Gauteng and the Western Cape.

Limpopo ranked highest with 48% of bribes solicited, followed by KZN at 26%, Gauteng at 25%, while the Western Cape recorded the lowest figure of 19%.

The survey also found that people paid bribes in efforts to get out of traffic offences, secure a job and to get a driver's licence, amongst other things.

Ethics South Africa's Kris Dobie says the findings paint a worrying picture.

"If people know that there's a chance that they might be caught [they'd steer away from bribery], because at the moment it doesn't seem that there's a very big chance that either people who offer bribes or who ask for bribes will be caught.

"So, I think what we need is some of those operations to make that chance of being caught a lot bigger," he said.
