24-hour security at Msunduzi power stations 'unsustainable'
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
Msunduzi says it's been
forced to hire 24-hour security to protect its power stations.

The city says the vandalism of primary and secondary stations, as well as electricity workshops, has been rife.
Msunduzi's municipal manager Lulamile Mapholoba says it's become an expensive problem as they're having to continuously repair infrastructure.
He says they realise this approach is no longer sustainable.

Mapholoba's acknowledged the additional costs involved in the hiring of security, but he says it's a small price to pay considering the damage being done to their stations.
"Due to various acts of vandalism, which is costing a huge amount of money, actually billions of rands. Some substations have been vandalised like Edgewood, Edenvale and many others. So, rather than losing the infrastructure we spend a bit of money to ensure that it's guarded all way round."
