eThekwini Municipality says its health and safety officials confiscated more than 100kgs of contaminated and expired food during raids on small local businesses.

They conducted unannounced inspections in Isipingo south of the city yesterday.
The municipality says five illegal immigrants were also arrested, while 22 business premises were fined a collective R52 000.
"Our message was quite clear - comply with the law or suffer severe consequences. We have also removed a considerable amount of food [items] from the shelves of these retailers which have reached an expiry date.
"We do not want a situation whereby we will have an outbreak of diseases caused by food [items] being sold to our people which have reached an expiry date," the municipality's Msawakhe Mayisela said.
