2017 Year in Review: Alleged cash in transit robbers shot dead on N2 in Durban

A number of very public gun battles between police and suspected robbers played out this year.

Shootouts on major traffic routes saw several suspects shot dead.

The first major incident occurred on the N2 freeway in the vicinity of Queen Nandi Drive in Durban on the 4th of August.

A high speed chase out of Durban resulted in a major crash on the southbound carriageway.

Police received information that a vehicle stolen in Reservoir Hills a few days earlier was going to be used in a robbery.

Officers gave chase and the suspects allegedly tried to force police off the road.


Both vehicles crashed through the centre median and into oncoming traffic.

A woman in a private vehicle was hurt and taken to hospital.

A gun battle ensued and two officers were hurt.

Police said at the time that four suspects were shot dead and a fifth was taken to hospital.

Meanwhile, similar scenes unfolded on the M13 near Pinetown just over a week later.

Suspects who allegedly staged a cash-in-transit heist at a garage in Hillcrest tried to escape on the M13 towards Durban. Three people were killed in that gun battle with police.


Six men were then killed following a cash-in-transit robbery in Durban's Springfield and Parlock areas on the 28th of August.

Three men were shot dead and seven more arrested on the N2 between Kokstad and Harding on the 1st of September. Officers say the suspects were also on their way to commit a cash-in-transit robbery.
