2 young girls drown in dam near Bergville

An inquest docket's been opened after two children drowned in a dam near Bergville.

Police say the girls - aged 11 and 14 - had been out swimming at Woodstock Dam on Sunday when the tragedy happened.
Okhahlamba's Disaster Management Unit's Freddie Halgreen was one of the first at scene.
He says he and his team began the initial search and went down two metres but couldn't find them.

The police's search and rescue then arrived.
Halgreen says eventually divers and the dog unit - found the two girls' bodies who were still clinging to each other.
"It was heart-breaking you know, two youngster's lives have been cut short because of the hot climate and they just wanted to cool down and being unfamiliar with the terrain where they were in they subsequently found themselves in trouble.
"The 11-year-old go into trouble first and the 14-year-old went to assist her but unfortunately the 11-year-old pulled the 14-year-old down and they both drowned."
