MTN says the theft of cellphone tower batteries doesn't only cost the company a lot of money - but has other consequences.

The network's been commenting following the arrest of two suspects in Verulam on Tuesday, who were found in possession of four tower batteries - said to cost R30 000 each.
The men are believed to be behind other cellphone tower thefts.

"It is important to note that these batteries are essential in keeping our networks operational during power interruptions," says MTN's Leigh-Ann Chetty.
"When these batteries are stolen, many South Africans are left without access network services which impacts on the access to emergency services, affective business operations and connecting with loved ones.
"Despite the number of theft incidences towards the end of last year, increased incidences of theft and damage early in 2020 shows the battle is far from over," says Chetty.
