18 lives lost in separate crashes in KZN

Motorists are being urged to respect traffic laws after 18 people were killed in two separate crashes in KwaZulu-Natal on Saturday.
A crash on the R617 between Howick and Mpophomeni claimed 12 lives, including that of a police officer.
Reports show there was an incident before the crash, where a passenger from the taxi transporting the victims jumped out of the moving vehicle and died.
This caused the vehicle to stop and passengers to exit.
Acting Transport MEC Jomo Sibiya, who visited the scene on Sunday, says police, passengers and other personnel who responded to the scene were on the roadside when tragedy struck.
"This car just came in and hit everything that was in its path and you can see that impact that the car was on high speed and it cause 11 fatalities on the spot."

The 12th victim died in hospital on Sunday.
Sibiya says in the second accident six died in a three-car collision on the N11 near Mawelawela.
"We want to caution them to drive cautiously and treat their cars and the road with caution and make sure that they drive not only for themselves but to also think about other people.
"You can see that this is a bend it means the car that was coming to this side was on high speed or he only saw these stationary cars just at a close range and he couldn't control his car - its a bend and all hell broke loose and other people lost their lives."
