172 babies born in KZN on New Year's Day

The KwaZulu-Natal Health Department has expressed concern over the high rate of unplanned pregnancies in the province.

One hundred and seventy-two babies were born in KZN on New Years Day - 92 girls and 78 baby boys.


A total of 28 teenage mothers, the youngest being a 14-year-old gave birth at health facilities across KZN.


KZN Health MEC Nomagugu Simelane welcomed babies on the south coast on Monday.

"As a province we remain concerned at the rate of unplanned pregnancies which is evident through among other indicators, the demand also for safe termination of the pregnancies especially within the ten to nine age group. 


"Of cause we will never turn anyone back,  but we are just using that as an indication that there is quite a lot of unsafe sex that is happening amongst our teenagers. We urge parents and guardians to speak openly with their children about sexual reproduction."
