13 killed in Durban, Ladysmith road crashes

Paramedics are on scene of a crash involving a truck and two taxis on Queen Nandi Drive - near the intersection of Quarry Heights Drive.

UPDATE: Five people have been killed, while four others are currently being treated by paramedics. 

KZN Emergency Medical Service's Robert Mckenzie says traffic on the eastbound lanes - heading towards Chris Hani Drive, or the old North Coast Road - has been severely affected.

"Tragically, four people have sustained fatal injuries in this crash. Paramedics are working together to treat five patients who have been injured - four of them critically. The exact cause of this crash is not known at this stage and authorities are investigating. EMS would like to remind motorists to be extremely cautious on the roads this morning due to several obstructions due to protest action," Mckenzie said.

Meanwhile - authorities are trying to establish what caused the fatal crash near Ladysmith in northern KZN that claimed nine lives yesterday.

A delivery vehicle and a taxi collided on the Helpmekaar Road. Robert Mckenzie from KZN EMS says nine people died at the scene. He says several other people were hurt.

"Paramedics from KZN Medical Emergency Services treated a total of ten patients at the scene for critical and serious injuries. The exact cause of this crash is not known at this stage and authorities are investigating further," Mckenzie said. 

The KZN Department of Transport's Mluleki Mntungwa says a full-scale investigation has been launched. 

"We have ordered our law enforcement agencies to work around the clock to ascertain what could have been the cause of the fatal crash. We want to send our deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and wish all those in hospital a speedy recovery," Mntungwa said.
