12 truck drivers arrested for N3 blockade want bail
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
Twelve truck drivers in custody for their alleged involvement in Friday's N3 blockade are hoping to get bail.
Dozens of trucks were abandoned at Van Reenen's Pass on key route in the early hours of the morning in a protest over the employment of foreign truck drivers.
The local drivers removed the keys leaving the heavy-duty vehicles to barricade the road until well into the evening.
Traffic authorities had to close the highway between Johannesburg and Durban - diverting motorists in both directions.
National Prosecution Authority (NPA) KwaZulu-Natal spokesperson Natasha Kara says the arrested group briefly appeared in the Ladysmith Magistrates Court on Monday morning.
"They are charged with contravention of the road traffic act, in particular stopping on a freeway without a lawful cause.
"The matter was remanded to 10 December 2021 for bail application."
