Community Safety MEC Peggy Nkonyeni has condemned this kind of criminality which she says is happening throughout the country and KZN province.

Police say unknown gunmen opened fire at Siqhopholozi Tuckshop in Savannah Park on Saturday night, shooting dead six people.

Another person succumbed to his injuries in hospital on Sunday.

It's not clear if the tuck shop is also being run as a liquor outlet, with police discovering bottles of alcohol in the store's fridge.

In another incident, five people were killed at a house in Dassenhoek, west of Durban.

Investigations are underway into reports that a gang of armed men shot the three women and two men during what's believed to have been a robbery, and made off with phones and a firearm.

Provincial police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi and Community Safety MEC Peggy Nkonyeni visited the crime scenes on Sunday.

"We have activated the community policing forums in the province. They have been reactivated now, even here, the CPF is with us trying to ensure they intervene when neccessary,” Nkonyeni said.
