12 die in horrific crash near Wartburg

12 people have died after a truck collided with a minibus at an intersection near Wartburg, close to Pietermaritzburg.

It's understood at this stage that a taxi collided with a combination truck carrying diesel and petrol at the R33/R614 intersection.
The crash lead to a fuel spill, resulting in the road being closed.
KZN Emergency Medical Service spokesperson, Robert McKenzie says two other people have been treated after sustaining critical injuries.
"The exact cause of the crash is not known at this stage and is going to be investigated by police. Emergency Services are still currently on the scene and are trying to clear the debris that is blocking the road," said McKenzie.

Members of the Road Traffic Inspectorate are on the scene to deal with the massive traffic backlog.

The RTI's Zinhle Mngomezulu, "There is an accident on the R33 Wartburg turn-off where a truck which is a combination truck with was carrying diesel collided with a minibus taxi. The minibus was ferrying passengers.
"We have got RTI Pietermaritzburg on scene controlling traffic in that area. Due to the size of the truck, the road is completely closed."
