Verulam murder-suicide: Children recovering after alleged poisoning

Two Verulam girls who were allegedly fed poison by their mother are recovering well in hospital.

It is understood that the girl's were given, what is believed to be rat poison and asked to walk to a local shop.

Police say when the girls arrived back at the home, north of Durban, they found the bodies of their mom and two brothers, aged 2 and 3-years-old hanging in their home.

Detectives say they are investigating a case of murder-suicide.

Both girls who showed signs of poisoning were rushed to a local hospital.

Reaction Unit officers were the first on the scene. Spokesperson, Prem Balram says a neighbour heard a little girl screaming for help. 

"He gained entry into the house and found a 37-year-old woman and her two children, aged two and three." 

"He then got into a taxi and came to the Reaction Unit South Africa, Head Quarters, where he informed us that the family needed medical attention."

"Paramedics were dispatched to the scene and upon arrival were all declared deceased," he says.
