Rachel Kolisi calls for hair salons to be more inclusive

As a mom of two mixed-race children, Rachel says it is challenging to find salons that can do the whole family's hair.

For the first time since becoming a mom, Rachel Kolisi has been able to get her whole family's hair done at the same place.

The mom of two, who is married to Springbok captain Siya Kolisi, recently opened up about the struggles she faces when trying to get the family's hair done at salons.

"I forgot to post this a few months ago, but something that I’ve been thinking about for some time, is why so many hair salons in SA specifically, only offer services for “either or”," she wrote.

Rachel shared a picture of herself and her two children - Nicholas and Keziah - at the salon. They were joined by Siya's younger sister Liphelo.

The 33-year-old revealed that they had been turned away from other salons because they couldn't work on her son's hair texture.

She says more salons need to diversify their hair services to include all hair textures.

"We had gone to a few places this day trying to get a haircut for Nic after being told 3 times 'we can’t cut hair like that' found a spot where all of our hair was celebrated, and my goodness we loved it! Generally, just feel salons could do better, and diversify."

Many of Rachel's followers said they felt her pain.

"I think salon owners should adopt the corporate way of empowering their staff by taking them to hair expos and training to broaden their skills. It's even painful finding a salon that won't pull your child's hair follicles or burn their afro' when blow-drying them," one woman commented.

Another woman added: "Whhaaaaat I’m shocked! 'Can’t do his type of hair', that is sad for 2023."

Rachel will soon have to say goodbye to her new favourite hair salon.

The family, who are currently based in KwaZulu-Natal, is heading to Paris, France, in a few weeks.

Rachel and the kids officially moved to Durban in December, but one month later, Siya revealed that he be leaving the Cell C Sharks and joining French club Racing 92.

There are just 18 days left until their big move. They have spent the last few weeks spending time with close family and friends in Cape Town and Johannesburg.

Rachel and Siya also visited their church in Ballito for the last time, but she says they are still behind on their packing!
