Gabrielle Union says stars don’t get paid what you think
Updated | By Entertainment Reporter
The actress says she has had to turn down certain movie roles because she is committed to caring for her parents, especially her dad who has dementia.

Gabrielle Union is getting honest about her finances.
The 'Bring It On' actress has cared for her parents, Theresa and Sylvester, for years. In 2023, her father, who has dementia, was placed in a memory care home.
“You know, nursing homes, what’s covered by insurance, what’s not, home health aids — like that all adds up and having to really be cognizant of an additional output, I have to go where the money goes."
Union shared the story during a recent appearance at the American Black Film Festival, where she participated in a conversation about 'Sisterhood & Savings'.
She says the change in her father's situation also affected her career, especially the projects she takes on.
“I don't have the luxury of taking all the independent films that I want because I can’t afford to pay for my extended family in the way that they have grown accustomed to.
“I have to factor in endorsements and brands and brand building. When you see celebrities have fifty 'leven jobs, there’s a reason,” the 52-year-old said, per People.
Union adds that she doesn't just rely on one income stream.
"We don’t get paid what y’all think that we get paid, and that cheque is split so many ways. You have to have multiple revenue streams to do the job that you really love. So it kind of depends on what I've made that year on how creative I can be — and that’s a damn shame, but that’s reality.”
Union previously made headlines after revealing she goes 50/50 with her husband, former NBA star Dwyane Wade, regarding their household finances.
In 2018, Forbes listed Wade's net worth as $38 million (R674 million). He is said to be worth much more in 2025.
Social media users are surprised that Union appears to be "struggling" with her dad's facility payments despite the couple's wealth.
"You’re married to Dwayne Wade, who’s made millions in the NBA. You mean to tell me he can’t afford to pay your dad’s nursing care?" one Instagram user asked.
Another added: "The way she be struggling while having a millionaire is crazy work!"
A third commented: "What is the point of being married to a rich man but still struggling like a single woman."
However, some pointed out that Wade probably also cares for his parents. Some also applauded Union for doing right by her parents.
"I get it. I took care of my mom for nine years with dementia. Insurance covers very little and out of pocket costs with in home aids, etc. is very expensive. I'm sure it's a huge sacrifice, but that she's honoured to be able to care for her dad," one woman remarked.
However, others were not convinced that the couple had to watch their finances so closely.
"Isn't her husband a millionaire? These two post themselves on expensive vacations a few times a year. I feel like she exaggerates sometimes."
"She needs to stop!! She is not struggling!"
While celebrating her father's 80th birthday in October last year, Union stressed the importance of helping your family.
"It all just reminds me to be a good, loyal friend, a great neighbour, prioritise your family, have a spirit of adventure and don’t take no **t. And always show up and show love."
