American television host, Phil McGraw, is saying goodbye to his popular daytime talk show, ‘Dr Phil’, after 21 seasons.

The 72-year-old’s contract with CBS Media Ventures expires in 2023 and it looks like he has his sights on prime-time TV.

‘Dr Phil’ premiered in 2002. The psychologist made a name for himself on ‘The Oprah Winfrey Show’ where he dished out advice to guests and members of the audience.

The segment became so popular that he teamed up with Oprah to executive produce his show.

Guests over the years have included drug addicts, shopaholics, serial cheaters, and troubled teens.

“I have been blessed with over 25 wonderful years in daytime television. With this show, we have helped thousands of guests and millions of viewers through everything from addiction and marriage to mental wellness and raising children. This has been an incredible chapter of my life and career, but while I’m moving on from daytime, there is so much more I wish to do,” Dr Phil said in a statement.

He already has several projects lined up including a prime-time TV deal that is set to debut in 2024.

“I am compelled to engage with a broader audience because I have grave concerns for the American family, and I am determined to help restore a clarity of purpose as well as our core values.”

According to Deadline, the show’s current 2022-2023 season will be the last time viewers get to see original episodes.

CBS Media Ventures will air old episodes for the 2023-2024 season. The reruns will be repackaged and included wrap-arounds and intros by Dr Phil, Deadline reports. The shows will also include updates on past guests.
